An Exhibition of Ancient Mesopotamian Art

Fine alabaster head of a woman from an orant statue. Her delicately sculpted features once included inlaid eyes with irises and eyebrows probably of lapis lazuli. Her mouth is formed in a slight smile. Like many Sumerian human representations, her eyebrows meet at the bridge of her nose. Orant statues, with large "other-worldly" eyes in both standing and sitting positions, were placed in Sumerian temples.
